Netlify Image Optimization Implementation

Overview

This project uses Netlify's automatic image optimization to improve performance and reduce bandwidth usage.

Features Implemented

🖼️ Optimized Images

All images are now served through Netlify's Image CDN with the following optimizations:

  1. Format Conversion: Automatic WebP conversion for better compression
  2. Responsive Images: Multiple sizes using srcset for different screen sizes
  3. Lazy Loading: Images load only when needed (except critical splash screens)
  4. Quality Optimization: Balanced quality settings (85-90) for optimal file size

📁 Images Using Optimization

Logo Images

  • InfinityByte Studio Logo (1920×1080)

    • Splash screen: 1920w and 960w variants
    • Format: WebP
    • Quality: 85%
  • NeuroCore Byte Wars Logo

    • Splash screen: 800w and 400w variants
    • Home screen: 600w and 300w variants
    • Favicon: 32×32 PNG
    • Format: WebP (splash/home), PNG (favicon)
    • Quality: 85-90%

Sprite Images

  • Player Sprite (sprite_0.png)
    • Size: 64×64
    • Format: PNG (maintained for pixel-perfect rendering)
    • Quality: 90%

🚀 Performance Benefits

  1. Faster Loading:

    • WebP format reduces file size by 25-35% compared to PNG
    • Responsive images serve appropriate sizes for each device
    • Browser caching reduces repeat downloads
  2. Bandwidth Savings:

    • Automatic format selection (WebP, AVIF when supported)
    • Optimized compression ratios
    • CDN delivery from nearest edge location
  3. SEO Improvements:

    • Faster page load times improve search rankings
    • Proper lazy loading improves Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)

⚙️ Configuration

Netlify.toml

[images]
  remote_images = ["https://*"]

_headers File

Caching headers configured for:

  • Optimized images: 1 year cache
  • Static assets: 1 year cache
  • HTML files: No cache (always fresh)
  • CSS/JS: 1 day cache with revalidation

🔧 Image URL Format

/.netlify/images?url=/path/to/image.png&w=WIDTH&h=HEIGHT&fit=FIT_MODE&fm=FORMAT&q=QUALITY

Parameters:

  • url: Original image path
  • w: Width in pixels
  • h: Height in pixels
  • fit: How to fit the image (contain, cover, fill)
  • fm: Output format (webp, png, jpg, avif)
  • q: Quality (1-100)

📱 Responsive Images

Using srcset and sizes attributes for responsive delivery:

<img src="/.netlify/images?url=/path/to/image.png&w=800&h=800&fit=contain&fm=webp&q=85"
     srcset="/.netlify/images?url=/path/to/image.png&w=400&h=400&fit=contain&fm=webp&q=85 400w,
             /.netlify/images?url=/path/to/image.png&w=800&h=800&fit=contain&fm=webp&q=85 800w"
     sizes="(max-width: 600px) 400px, 800px"
     alt="Description"
     loading="lazy">

🎯 Loading Strategy

  • Eager Loading: Splash screen logos (first paint critical)
  • Lazy Loading: Home screen logo and other non-critical images

📊 Monitoring

To monitor image optimization performance:

  1. Check Netlify Analytics dashboard
  2. Use Chrome DevTools Network tab to verify WebP delivery
  3. Check Lighthouse scores for improved performance metrics

🔄 Future Improvements

Potential enhancements:

  • AVIF format support for even better compression
  • Art direction with different images for mobile/desktop
  • Further lazy loading optimization
  • Progressive image loading with blur-up technique

Notes

  • Images are automatically cached by Netlify's CDN
  • Original images remain in /assets/ folder
  • Optimization happens automatically on Netlify's servers
  • No build step required for image processing
  • Works seamlessly with both local development and production
