This usually happens when you don't define any unlock conditions. This page on the Wiki explains the BCSV that's used to set the unlock conditions.

Ok, now when playing the Star Return cutscene, the game only plays the first second or so of it, and then the screen turns black.

Ok, the game no longer freezes, but the cutscene is still not being played.
