Import .ics files directly?

I'd like to be able to add emailed .ics events to my Rustical-hosted calendar directly, without downloading to my local device. Does/could Rustical support importing .ics files via API endpoints? eg /apiendpoint/addevent?token=apitoken&calendar=calendarID&icsUrl=base64urlencoded-icsdownloadurl , then Rustical curls for the download and imports the ics event to the indicated calendar

You can directly import using a PUT request.
PUT /caldav/principal/<user>/<cal_id>/event.ics
In curl curl -T ./event.ics /caldav/principal/<user>/<cal_id>/event.ics
Such an endpoint to import from a URL does not exist but I'm also not entirely sure why that would be necessary.

Alternatively you can also use the

IMPORT /caldav/principal/<user>/<cal_id>

endpoint with the .ics file as the payload. The difference is that rustical will then automatically guess the filenames from the event UID.
Note however that right now clients will not be notified about imported events and will manually have to do a full refresh, see #140 (I'll fix that as soon as I find time for it)

I'm also not entirely sure why that would be necessary.

In my use case, I was thinking of writing a browser extension so that I can add meeting invites directly to my calendar from my email- for example, I often get Google Meet invites, and a .ics file is attached, which I would like to import to my Rustical calendar just as easily as I can import to Google Calendar, rather than having to download the file > open in Calendar client or curl to Rustical. Though looking at coding the extension, it looks like I could fetch the file info and upload it through the payload as you described.

Does that post action require an API key?

Alright, that sounds fun. Yeah, you have to authenticate with Basic authentication, so your username and an app token as password.
