Correction to my post: when browsing the Apps menu with no query, the subtitle does show GenericName. It's only in search results that the subtitle switches to the breadcrumb ("Apps"), which is the case in the screenshot. So option 2 would just mean using the description for app rows in search too. |

The problem
I replaced Nautilus with Flea and hid Nautilus's entry. Now anyone else using my laptop who types "files" in the launcher sees "Flea", which means nothing to them.
The .desktop file already says what the app is (
GenericName=File Manager), and the shell already reads it: Menu.qml uses it as the app row's description and as a search alias. But the title is alwaysName, and in search results the subtitle shows the breadcrumb ("Apps"), so GenericName never appears on screen.Suggestion, either of:
Why not a local override
Copying the .desktop file into ~/.local/share/applications and editing Name works, but that copy stops getting package updates.
