Hey everyone!

Time for a quick check-in on what's been happening across Apps, API & Webhooks. Over the past few weeks, we've seen a mix of bug reports, feature requests, security discussions, and a lot of thoughtful troubleshooting around authentication, permissions, and workflow automation.

• GITHUB_TOKEN gets 403 when posting PR comments on branch protected by ruleset despite pull-requests: write permission - @llegaz ran into a frustrating 403 when trying to post PR comments from a GitHub Actions workflow targeting a protected branch. @davex-ai stepped in with an incredibly thorough breakdown of how GITHUB_TOKEN permissions interact with rulesets, explaining why the token gets silently downgraded and offering three clean solutions (using pull_request_target, a PAT, or a GitHub App).
• Do git clone or git lfs fetch --all fail if a GitHub App installation token expires mid-operation? - @Aakash4792 asked a practical question about what happens when a GitHub App token expires during a long-running Git operation. @SROff23712 and @easwar16 both provided detailed answers explaining why git clone survives token expiry (the stream is already authorized) while LFS fails (each object requires a separate authenticated request), along with best practices for token refresh.
• Are GitHub App installation IDs considered sensitive — should we store them securely in a database? - @Aakash4792 raised a common security question that many developers integrating GitHub Apps face. The community delivered, with @vladlen-codes, @alpha37283, and others clearly explaining that installation IDs are identifiers (like usernames), not credentials, and only the private key and tokens need to be protected.

• 🔐 Secret scanning in AI coding agents via the GitHub MCP Server - Secret scanning is now available earlier in the development flow through the MCP Server, helping prevent credential leaks before code is even committed.
