I am facing the same issue.

I applied as Teacher/Faculty and my application is repeatedly rejected with the generic
message “We were unfortunately not able to verify your academic status”.

I am a Postdoctoral Researcher at INSERM (France) and submitted a complete official
employment letter with institutional letterhead, dates, signature, and stamp.
My GitHub account is personal, my professional email is registered into my github account, and my full name matches the documents.

Is there a manual review process for researchers at public research institutions
that are not universities?

Without the exact rejection message it's guesswork, but the most common cause is a name mismatch. Your GitHub profile name has to match the name on your document character for character, including order and accents. If the doc shows "Jean Martin Dupont" and your profile says "Jean Dupont", the auto-check kills it before a human ever looks at it.

Document quality matters more than people realize. A phone photo in good natural lighting beats any scan. Make sure the enrollment date is clearly visible and within the current academic year, and that there's no glare on the relevant fields.

Account age is another one that catches people. Brand new accounts with zero activity get flagged. Push a few commits, fill out your bio, wait a few days, then reapply.

If you've already covered all that and it still gets rejected, open a ticket at support.github.com with the rejection email attached. Got mine approved that way after two auto-rejections. A real person will look at it and tell you what's actually wrong.

What's the exact rejection message you received? If it's the generic "we were unable to verify your academic status", the fix depends on whether it's a doc issue or a profile issue.

Exactly, we do not have more information. Previously it told me the name didn't match, I made sure that the name matches.

Also for me, my complete name on my GitHub profile is in the same order as the official document (First name then capital Last name, but on my access card is capital last name then capital first name). The document specifies when I started and when my contract finishes, where I work. The photo sent has my document and my access card, with no reflection. My account has some projects already.

I tried to open a ticket but "manual and individual status assessments and reports are no longer available", and I keep looping with copilot, telling me my paper are ok, he can't help me more, and I have to come here to explain my problem.

So basically I'm stuck, with no possibilities to communicate with someone, and hoping that someone on GitHub team will reach out to me.

Nobody will help u, they added new AI which analyse your documents and they not gonna hurry to fix that
