[BUG] Poor highlight all tags performance

What happened?

Clicking "highlight tags" on this document makes the browser unresponsive for some time:

The build includes the performance improvements in #807.

This document has a large number of continuations (~18000) and I wonder if the fix in #818 has made the performance worse in this case.
