In recent months, a new AI cheating tool has appeared on the Mahjong Soul (雀魂) and Tenhou (天凤) platforms: Big Coach. Its playing style differs significantly from that of Mortal and Naga, making it highly covert and difficult to detect through replay analysis. However, this AI has achieved extremely impressive results on both Tenhou and Mahjong Soul. There is substantial evidence indicating that Big Coach is based on the Mortal codebase but trained with different data.
The author of Big Coach used this open-source code to train a series of models and sold access to them through a subscription-based model for profit. A large number of dishonest players have used this cheating tool to reach very high ranks on Tenhou and Mahjong Soul (such as 10-dan and Soul Heaven), which has severely affected fair play for normal users.
I believe that the original intention of the open-source author was to promote learning and research. However, the widespread abuse of cheating tools resulting from this release has indeed seriously undermined the fairness of online mahjong platforms. Moreover, the author of Big Coach has used models trained from this code for commercial purposes and gained substantial profits, while neither open-sourcing the code or models nor complying with the AGPL-3.0 license. This is deeply distressing.
