fix: keep LiteRT-LM members so local inference works in release builds - #338
Conversation
Release builds (F-Droid/Play) crashed with SIGABRT the moment the first message of a local chat was sent: JNI DETECTED ERROR IN APPLICATION: mid == null in call to CallIntMethodV from long com.google.ai.edge.litertlm.LiteRtLmJni.nativeCreateConversation(...) The litertlm-android AAR ships no consumer ProGuard rules, yet its native layer resolves Java members by name through JNI. R8 full mode strips those members because no Kotlin/Java code references them, so GetMethodID returns null and ART aborts the process. Verified against the shipped dex: getTopK, getTopP, getTemperature and MessageCallback.onMessage/onDone/onError were present in liblitertlm_jni.so but absent from classes.dex. getTopK is the only int of the three sampler getters, which matches CallIntMethodV exactly. Keeping the package also preserves the names of this app's MessageCallback and OpenApiTool implementations, which must match the interfaces they override. Without that, a second crash waits in the streaming path even after the first one is fixed. Debug builds are not minified, which is why this never surfaced during development. Tested on a Pixel 7 Pro running Android 16: release build loads the DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-1.5B model and streams replies with an empty crash buffer, where the F-Droid build aborted every time.
The three catch sites in LiteRtLmAdapter (streamRound, loadEngineOrFallback and its CPU-fallback) only caught Exception, so any Error raised while talking to LiteRT-LM (UnsatisfiedLinkError from a failed dlopen, OutOfMemoryError while allocating KV cache, ...) escaped the adapter and took the whole process down without a message on screen. Widen them to Throwable, rethrowing CancellationException first so structured concurrency keeps working, and report the failure through ProviderEvent.Failed like the other error paths. This does not catch native signals: a SIGABRT raised by ART cannot be handled from Kotlin, so it complements rather than replaces the keep rules added for the litertlm package.

VirtualMachineError and ThreadDeath before applying existing recovery or failure

Addressing review feedback: catching Throwable also catches VirtualMachineError (OutOfMemoryError, StackOverflowError) and ThreadDeath, which are not recoverable. Converting them into ProviderEvent.Failed suggests a transient failure the user can retry, and in loadEngineOrFallback it would immediately attempt to load a second engine on CPU, allocating again on an already exhausted VM. Rethrow both at the top of the three handlers and keep the narrower handling for the recoverable LiteRT-LM errors (UnsatisfiedLinkError and friends) that this change exists to surface in the chat.

LGTM! Thanks for the contribution 👍
What
Fixes the native crash that closes the app silently when sending the first message of a
Local Platform chat in any release build (F-Droid / Play).
Two files:
1.
app/proguard-rules.pro— the fix2.
LiteRtLmAdapter.kt— defensive hardeningcatch (error: Exception)→catch (error: Throwable)in three places (streamRound, loadEngineOrFallback, and its inner CPU-fallback catch), withCancellationExceptionrethrown first. LiteRT-LM can surface
Errors (UnsatisfiedLinkError,OutOfMemoryError) thatExceptionhandlers never see; those currently escape the adapterand kill the process instead of producing an in-chat error.
This is not what caused the reported
SIGABRT(a native signal cannot be caught fromKotlin), it just closes the same class of "app dies with no message" failures.
Why
Crash report:
liblitertlm_jni.soclasses.dexgetTopK/getTopP/getTemperatureonMessage/onDone/onErrorlitertlm/SamplerConfig(class)litertlm-android-0.11.0.aarships noproguard.txt, so nothing tells R8 that these membersare referenced from native code. Debug builds never reproduce it because they are not minified.
Testing
./gradlew assembleRelease, confirmgetTopKandonMessageare present in therelease
classes.dex(they were absent before the rule)../gradlew test/ktlintunchanged (no Kotlin source touched exceptLiteRtLmAdapter).Summary by CodeRabbit
