fix(v2): keep the Activity rail badge inside the rail (TASK-363) - #2494
Conversation
A three-digit count (230) put the badge 6px past the rail edge, so the nav
overflowed sideways (scrollWidth 41 vs clientWidth 35 at 1440). The visible
count now caps at 99+ (max={99}), with the exact count on the badge as a
title and in the aria-label. The badge's right offset moves from -14px to -6px
so it sits inside the nav box.
Not added: an overflow-x: hidden guard on .v2-rail__nav. The hover label
(.v2-rail__item:hover::after) is absolutely positioned at left: calc(100%+8px),
outside the nav, so overflow-x hidden would clip every hover label.
Invariant: the cap, the title, and right: -6px are pinned. Restoring -14px
reddens it. Layout suite: 220/220.

… it (TASK-363)
Drop the 99+ cap. The overflow was the badge's -14px right offset, not the
digit count: at -6px a three-digit count fits (230 and 105 both measure
scrollWidth 35 / clientWidth 35 at 1440, badge right 57 vs nav right 59).
The full count stays visible, which V2CommunityNav pins ('not a capped card
count or 99+'). The exact count stays on the badge as a title.
Invariant: the title and right: -6px are pinned; restoring -14px reddens it.

Render review at b54998a.
I measured in Chromium with this head's v2.css, a live-shaped rail (56px pane, six 32px items) and MUI's Badge base styles. The PR's own override wins: transform: none, right: -6px.
At 1440×900:
- 230:
.v2-rail__navscrollWidth 35 == clientWidth 35. The badge reads "230" in full, x 27.6–57.5 against nav 24–59. - 1234: scrollWidth 35 == clientWidth 35. The badge reads "1234" in full, 36.5px wide, x 21–57.5.
- In both, the badge's right edge lines up with the button's right edge. Before the fix it sat 6px past the nav.
- The badge spans y 110–126. The previous item ends at 108 and the next starts at 148, so it covers neither neighbour.
At 1440×440, where the media query turns .v2-rail__nav into overflow-y: auto; overflow-x: hidden: scrollWidth 35 == clientWidth 35. "1234" still reads in full. Its left 3px (border and padding only) fall outside the nav box and are clipped, and the digits start inside it.
At 390 the rail is display: none (≤760), so the badge doesn't render. No page-level sideways scroll comes from the rail.
One observation for the code gate, not a render defect: at normal heights .v2-rail__nav computes overflow-x: visible. The overflow-x: hidden guard exists only inside @media (max-height: 460px).

CODE GATE: HOLD @ b54998a
The offset rule at frontend/src/v2/v2.css:12714 is .v2-rail__item-icon .MuiBadge-badge { right: -6px; }. That selector applies to every badge in any rail item, rather than the Activity badge alone. Activity is the only rail badge today, but the requested scope is not encoded. Give the Activity item or badge a specific class and pin that selector in the invariant test; the current test at v2-layout-invariants.test.ts:904-911 pins the generic selector.
I applied Lily's correction in pod message 81148: the normal-height overflow-x: hidden guard is excluded because it clips the hover labels. The exact count remains in the button and badge aria-labels. The targeted invariant suite passed 220/220; changing right: -6px back to -14px made the new test fail, then I restored the file.

Render re-check against the corrected property at b54998a. There's no overflow-x guard on .v2-rail__nav, by ruling. This review supersedes the note about the guard in my earlier review.
Measured in Chromium with this head's v2.css, a live-shaped shell (56px rail, pods aside, main) and MUI's Badge base styles:
- 230 at 1440×900:
.v2-rail__navat rest has scrollWidth 35 == clientWidth 35. The badge reads "230" in full, with its right edge at the button edge (57.5) inside the nav (59). - 1234 at 1440×900: scrollWidth 35 == clientWidth 35. The badge reads "1234" in full at 36.5px wide, and spans y 110–126, clear of the previous item (ends at 108) and the next (starts at 148).
- Hover labels: hovering Agents shows the "Agents" label beside the rail, 8px right of the button and drawn over the pods pane.
elementFromPointat the label returns the rail item, so nothing covers it. While the label is shown, scrollWidth grows to 101; this is the label itself, whichoverflow: visiblelets escape, and nothing scrolls. - Offset regression: the invariant pins
right: -6pxon.v2-rail__item-icon .MuiBadge-badge, so a revert to -14px fails it. - 390: the rail is
display: none(≤760). No sideways scroll comes from it.

…K-363) The -6px right offset moved onto a dedicated v2-rail__badge--activity class, so only the Activity badge changes. The base rail badge rule goes back to -14px. The Activity selector is 0,3,0 and outranks the base rule. Invariant pins the class, the Activity offset, and the base offset. Restoring the Activity offset to -14px reddens it. Render delta re-stamp at d9e5d9b, after my PASS at b54998a. The delta only scopes the offset: the Activity Badge gets className="v2-rail__badge--activity", the new rule .v2-rail__item-icon .v2-rail__badge--activity .MuiBadge-badge { right: -6px } applies to it, and the base rule goes back to -14px.
Re-measured in Chromium with this head's v2.css, with the class on the MUI Badge root as MUI renders it:
- Activity badge: computed
right: -6px(0,3,0 beats the 0,2,0 base). - 230 at 1440×900:
.v2-rail__navscrollWidth 35 == clientWidth 35. The badge is x 27.6–57.5 inside the nav (right edge 59) and reads in full. - 1234 at 1440×900: scrollWidth 35 == clientWidth 35. The badge is x 21–57.5 and reads in full. The geometry is identical to b54998a.
- Other rail badges: a badge on any other rail item computes
right: -14px, unchanged from main. - Hover labels: the delta touches no rule behind the rail labels (
.v2-rail__item::after,.v2-rail__navoverflow), so my hover check at b54998a still holds.

CODE GATE: PASS @ d9e5d9b
The delta from b54998a changes only V2NavRail, v2.css, and the layout invariant. The Badge rendered only in the Activity branch now carries v2-rail__badge--activity. Its selector sets right: -6px with specificity 0-3-0, above the restored generic rail badge rule at right: -14px and 0-2-0. Other rail badges keep the base offset. The exact count remains in both aria-labels, and the normal-height nav retains visible overflow for hover labels as Lily ruled in pod message 81148.
The focused invariant passed at this head. Changing the Activity rule back to right: -14px made it fail, then I restored the file. CI is green. No defect found in this delta; Lumen's render gate is separate.
