fix: repair provider arguments, deep search, and chat sessions - #2459
Reviewed CONTRIBUTING.md and AGENTS.md. Repairs the five supplied AI findings and verified regressions in their affected paths:
Preserve the auto provider profile and forward the full CLI argument tail.
Enable explicit deep search of loaded sessions within active filters. Preserve pending/completed results through page appends, validate model indices, show retryable provider/parser exceptions, and describe the background model accurately.
Keep search diagnostics free of private content, including successful real transcript hydration with optional slow-operation instrumentation enabled.
Ignore invalid shell-output limits while preserving zero/positive caps.
Clear New Chat identity/history across views, preserve streaming-resume readiness, and cancel reset-related stale loads/sends.
Reject transcript IDs containing path separators or NUL before lookup, preserving legitimate filename IDs and alternate stores.
The hydration follow-up fixes the input-bearing operation: search requests native JSON parsing through the existing loader's main-transcript and recovered pre-compaction metadata passes. Other callers retain their existing parsing and diagnostic behavior; there is no global suppression state or alternate reader.
Impact
No new dependencies, storage formats, provider routes, config-home layout, or permission-policy changes. Ordinary filtering stays local. Explicit deep search sends metadata and bounded excerpts from up to 100 loaded, filtered sessions to the background model, which can differ from the active chat model.
The hydration diagnostic defect requires explicitly enabled source-mode slow-operation instrumentation and debug logging. The standard compiled CLI disables that instrumentation.
Reviewed, validated, and pushed repair: 94b1e471dc412cd0c6679685717bab864387c9b7; Linux, Node 26.12.1, Bun 1.4.4.
Passed frozen install; check:static (lint, any budget, build/smoke, deadcode); typecheck:fast (3,310 files); typecheck:type-tests (11 files); both normal and compile-cache-disabled launchers; committed canonical-base intent scan; whitespace check.
Focused search/storage/recovery/picker group: 66 passed. The new real-loader privacy regression fails before the correction at the private-title diagnostic oracle; afterward 4 search cases pass, including optional instrumentation on/off, small and compacted >5MB histories, metadata restoration, model-input preservation, and unchanged default-loader diagnostics.
Full unit run completed 8/8 shards: 11,520 passed, 3 skipped, 1 verified pre-existing failure. The order-dependent src/utils/fastMode.test.ts:277 Opus-alias assertion fails identically on independently built upstream 20a50493c775f151b61e1fabd5fa678ad1fbdaae with the same 73-file ordering (1,254 passed / 1 failed); the isolated file passes 4/4. Its test/model/implementation are byte-identical to upstream. Documented under the contributor policy's pre-existing-failure exception; no unrelated fast-mode changes or weakened assertions.
Dedicated feature checks passed: conversation arc 1/1, context efficiency 4/4. They ran separately because the known baseline unit failure stops the chained script.
Independent focused review of the repair found no actionable defect or scope expansion. Existing extension evidence from 618002e0 remains applicable; extension sources/dependencies are unchanged.
All 26 applicable current-head checks passed; two expected path-filter skips. CodeRabbit approved this exact head. PR retained as draft for maintainer review.
Notes
The existing bounded search snapshot, safe missing/invalid-field empty fallbacks, and general idle-view resume behavior are preserved. Full-history enumeration, extra rerun UI, general resume queuing, and global logging-policy changes are excluded.
Automated-review follow-up: the complete COMMENTED review, including both outside-diff suggestions, was evaluated separately from the approval. Its no-text-block and non-JSON-text suggestions request changing existing empty-result fallbacks. Both branches are byte-identical to starting head 618002e0; the privacy repair does not change response handling. A real-helper probe confirmed absent text, non-JSON text and valid empty results retain their existing empty fallback, while thrown JSON parsing errors reject with the sanitized failure. These suggestions are declined as a response-policy expansion beyond the named privacy repair and the previously documented fallback scope. No additional inline request belongs to these current-head reviews.
Model transport and VS Code host/process/DOM boundaries use doubles; real storage, compaction parsing, Ink input, renderer script, controller and NDJSON paths have regression coverage. No live-provider or native VS Code GUI verification. No visual change in the hydration follow-up.
This PR updates saved-session search, provider CLI argument parsing, shell output line limits, and VS Code chat session handling. It adds related tests and documentation.
Changes: Saved-conversation search
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Enable deep search in the conversation picker README.md, src/components/LogSelector.tsx, src/components/LogSelector.resumeBranches.test.ts
The picker enables deep search when a callback is available and passes sessions filtered by active tag, branch, and worktree settings. Search state resets when its query or scopes change, but append-only history loading does not reset it. Tests cover search, retry, and recovered results. The README documents the loaded-session limit and transcript excerpt sent to the model provider.
Validate search results and diagnostics src/utils/agenticSessionSearch.ts, src/utils/agenticSessionSearch.test.ts, src/utils/sessionStorage.ts
Search logging omits the query, prompt preview, model response, and caught error text. Result indices must be valid integers within transcript-log bounds. Transcript parsing can disable content-bearing diagnostics. Tests check result handling and diagnostic content.
Provider launcher arguments
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Parse and forward CLI arguments scripts/provider-launch.ts, scripts/provider-launch.test.ts, docs/advanced-setup.md
The launcher forwards arguments from the first unrecognized argument, or after --. Tests check argument patterns. Documentation describes the auto default, option ordering, profile selection, and passthrough.
Shell output line limits
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Validate command-specific line limits src/utils/promptShellExecution.ts, src/utils/promptShellExecution.test.ts
Line-limit selection ignores nonfinite, fractional, and negative limits. Tests cover invalid limits and valid zero and positive limits.
VS Code chat sessions
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Reset chat state and guard pending operations vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode/src/chat/chatProvider.js, vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode/src/extension.js, vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode/src/chat/chatRenderer.js, vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode/src/chat/chatRenderer.test.js, vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode/src/chat/resume.test.js, vscode-extension/openclaude-vscode/README.md
New-chat actions reset session identity and messages. Sends and resume operations check for process or reset-generation changes. Tests cover both chat interfaces, delayed history loads, readiness races, and renderer state. The README describes new-chat behavior.
Malformed model responses can appear as no matches instead of offering a retry. The change is otherwise mergeable with this limitation.

Explanation
PASS. The PR touches provider routing, outbound background-model requests, subprocess startup, and config-home transcript lookup. The review explicitly identifies these risk surfaces: “provider/profile argument handling,” “outbound-model request,” “config-home transcript lookup,” and “subprocess/reset paths.” It states that no unresolved blocker was found and notes no permission-policy or config-home-layout change. The diff confirms these surfaces in provider-launch argument handling, agentic search model calls, chat process reset logic, and session path resolution.
Full details: No Hidden Policy Change
Explanation
The diff does contain explicit product and network behavior for deep search, but it is not hidden: LogSelector exposes it only through the supplied onAgenticSearch callback, the UI names the background model and loaded-session limit, and README.md states that the explicit action sends bounded transcript excerpts and metadata to the provider. agenticSessionSearch uses the existing sideQuery path with querySource: 'session_search' and the existing getSmallFastModel() selection; neither routing defaults nor permission policy changed. The provider-launch semantics are also documented in docs/advanced-setup.md. The diff adds one bounded error telemetry event and removes private diagnostic content; it does not introduce a new telemetry or network policy. No maintainer-alignment blocker is hidden in unrelated cleanup.

Cancel an in-flight resume when New Chat resets the session.
If transcript loading is pending when the user selects New Chat, the resume handler can finish afterward. _loadAndDisplaySession() then restores the old messages, and startSession() restores the old session ID. Guard both post-load steps with the startup generation, or another reset token, in the sidebar and panel handlers. Add a test that holds transcript loading across New Chat. As per path instructions, review VS Code bridge changes for “schema compatibility” and “user-visible failure modes,” and test changed behavior.

@coderabbitai Follow-up 6628aa7 addresses the current review. The outside-diff stale-results comment is fixed: changing the filtered candidate set aborts pending deep search and clears its results; the real Ink keyboard regression proves a recovered result disappears on tag change. Inline replies document the streaming reset and the scope-preserving reset-only generation. Full-history enumeration and a general resume send queue are unchanged baseline behavior outside the five supplied reports; the UI now explicitly discloses bounded loaded-session search. Required local gates pass. Please review the current revision.
Do not log conversation excerpts during deep search.
This change makes agenticSessionSearch reachable. That function builds prompts with first messages and transcript excerpts, then logs the first 500 characters. @coderabbitaiacd1fe8 addresses review 5672650498. The action label now names the configured model. The outside-diff privacy finding is fixed in agenticSessionSearch: removed query text, the prompt excerpt and raw model response from direct debug diagnostics; counts and model diagnostics remain. A child-isolated regression exercises real prompt assembly and result mapping with a model double, proving the model receives session content while the captured debug sink omits query/first message/transcript/response. It fails on 6628aa7 and passes now. Required static/type/launcher/intent checks pass; unchanged extension evidence remains 53/53. Please review this revision.
Keep deep-search results independent from pagination.
When deep search returns a nonempty result list shorter than visibleCount, the load-more effect can request more sessions from that result list. The appended sessions change baseFilteredLogs, which aborts the search and clears its valid results before selection. Skip pagination while agenticSearchState.status === "results".

Addressed the four confirmed follow-up findings together in 9ecf10b, including both Major outside-diff findings in review 5672788642. That COMMENTED review preceded a separate approval on the same old head; the earlier approval did not mean those findings were resolved.
Streaming resume: only New Chat's clear carries resetStreaming. Both sidebar/panel renderers stay blocked during the selected history load; the real renderer/controller/ProcessManager regression rejects the interim prompt, then verifies NDJSON reaches the selected session and a subsequent New Chat starts fresh. This narrows the prior response to 4392671835/4392671844; no general idle-resume queue is added.
Paging: invalidate on query/filter changes or candidate replacement, preserve append-only history growth, and preserve the selected tag by name when a page introduces sorted tags. The real Ink regression covers pending and completed searches, result selection, and later filter invalidation. Merely suppressing future pagination would not cover pages already in flight.
Diagnostics: parser/provider and transcript-load failures now emit fixed local messages to both diagnostic sinks. The regression verifies malformed model output and provider/load errors cannot copy private text to either sink.
Decoder: accept only an array of actual numeric integer positions within bounds; publish only existing logs. Invalid types, fractions, missing/null/nonarray fields and out-of-range controls are covered.
Also completed 4392854234's provider-neutral wording across action, progress and result labels. Earlier candidate-filter, local-Enter, all-view reset, cancellation, launcher/docs/env and path/limit fixes remain covered. Loaded-history disclosure remains the scoped resolution of 4392671827. Advisory effect-style/docstring-coverage warnings were reviewed; no functional defect or mandatory local-gate failure justifies an unrelated rewrite.
44 focused tests and 53 extension tests pass, plus required static/type/lint/launcher/intent checks. Four independent regressions fail on acd1fe8 and pass here. Independent focused lifecycle review completed. All review bodies (including COMMENTED), inline replies and discussion summaries are being checked; current CI/re-review pending.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Keep model output out of slow-operation diagnostics.
When SLOW_OPERATION_LOGGING is enabled and parsing exceeds its threshold, jsonParse records the first 80 characters of the JSON in debug and slow-operation diagnostics. A malformed response can include private transcript text there. The normal open build disables this feature, but the privacy test also leaves it disabled. Use a parser that does not record its input, and test this path with the feature enabled. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
Based on learnings: “avoid logging raw file contents or full message/request bodies.”

Follow-up 5d70ed1 addresses both new review5673498800 concerns. Inline4393506088 is fixed through the existing error state and manual action. The additional “unverified” slow-operation finding was independently verified with SLOW_OPERATION_LOGGING enabled and threshold0: the prior instrumented parser exposed private transcript text. This feature is disabled in the normal open build, so the exposure is conditional. The local search parser now uses native JSON.parse; no global logging/parser changes. The isolated regression explicitly verifies that optional instrumentation is active and checks debug, error, and slow-operation sinks after search, including malformed output.
All nine changed search tests and required static/type/launcher/intent gates pass; unaffected extension evidence remains53/53. React Doctor suggestions about compiled memo code/effect style and the pre-existing analytics side effect were reviewed, with no demonstrated new failure requiring a rewrite. Every review body, including COMMENTED and outside-diff text, remains part of the final audit. CI and new automated review pending.

Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Allow another search after more sessions load.
After a search returns results, this condition hides the search action. Paging preserves the results, so the user cannot search newly loaded sessions with the same query without editing it first. Allow an explicit rerun while retaining the current results.

273-273: Keep malformed responses retryable.
A response without a JSON object still returns an empty result. The picker treats it as a successful search and hides the retry action. Route this case through the sanitized failure path.
Follow-up to the complete review5673701994, including additional comments and summary prose:
Fixed4393657632 in5b0032f0: accurate background-model wording, docs and captures.
Retained search snapshot after page appends. An explicit rerun while retaining results is an additional UI capability, not needed to fix the reported loss of pending/completed results. Current bounded loaded-session scope is disclosed; changing query/filter permits another search.
Retained no-JSON/missing-field safe empty fallbacks as permitted by the supplied response-validation finding. Thrown provider/parser failures remain sanitized and explicitly retryable. A broader response-policy change is excluded from this repair.
The summary's generic New Chat/resume race concern supplies no new failing trace. Task-owned reset/load/send and streaming-resume races have production renderer/controller/ProcessManager regressions, plus independent lifecycle review. The older idle-view resume race exists at main and is explicitly outside the supplied finding. It is disclosed in the PR body, not claimed fixed.
Risk assessment: no unresolved blocker found in the changed provider/profile argument handling, opt-in outbound-model request, config-home transcript lookup, or subprocess/reset paths. Live-provider/native-GUI coverage remain limitations; CI covers supported launcher platforms. No provider route, config-home layout or permission policy change. Docstring metric/React style advisories do not establish functional defects or required local-gate failures; no unrelated rewrites added.
This audit includes COMMENTED review bodies and outside-diff/additional findings, not just approval state. Previous CI passed all26 applicable checks; final wording revision is awaiting CI/re-review. PR remains draft.

Final status on618002e0: all26 applicable checks pass, two expected path-filter skips. CodeRabbit's latest check completed successfully (run899a62f4-3aff-4e7a-a4d3-71745ccf5acb), and its current summary accepts the deep-search/launcher/line-limit changes. Both previous Minor documentation findings are fixed.
The summary repeats a generic stale-history/wrong-conversation resume warning, but the completed run published no new inline finding or current-head review/approval. I rechecked all pages of reviews, inline comments and discussion, including COMMENTED bodies. The task-owned streaming-resume/reset paths have integrated regressions and an independent lifecycle review. The older idle-view resume race was explicitly excluded by the supplied finding and remains disclosed; no queue or resume redesign was added just to satisfy generic summary prose.
All requested/admitted fixes are submitted. Readiness is not claimed from green checks alone: GitHub remains CHANGES_REQUESTED, and AGENTS.md requires current-revision CodeRabbit approval or an explicit maintainer exception. Please assess that remaining review gate against the documented scope and regression evidence. PR remains draft.
Treat a response without a text block as a search failure.

Summary
Reviewed CONTRIBUTING.md and AGENTS.md. Repairs the five supplied AI findings and verified regressions in their affected paths:
Testing
94b1e471dc412cd0c6679685717bab864387c9b7; Linux, Node 26.12.1, Bun 1.4.4.check:static(lint, any budget, build/smoke, deadcode);typecheck:fast(3,310 files);typecheck:type-tests(11 files); both normal and compile-cache-disabled launchers; committed canonical-base intent scan; whitespace check.src/utils/fastMode.test.ts:277Opus-alias assertion fails identically on independently built upstream20a50493c775f151b61e1fabd5fa678ad1fbdaaewith the same 73-file ordering (1,254 passed / 1 failed); the isolated file passes 4/4. Its test/model/implementation are byte-identical to upstream. Documented under the contributor policy's pre-existing-failure exception; no unrelated fast-mode changes or weakened assertions.618002e0remains applicable; extension sources/dependencies are unchanged.Notes
The existing bounded search snapshot, safe missing/invalid-field empty fallbacks, and general idle-view resume behavior are preserved. Full-history enumeration, extra rerun UI, general resume queuing, and global logging-policy changes are excluded.
Automated-review follow-up: the complete COMMENTED review, including both outside-diff suggestions, was evaluated separately from the approval. Its no-text-block and non-JSON-text suggestions request changing existing empty-result fallbacks. Both branches are byte-identical to starting head
618002e0; the privacy repair does not change response handling. No additional inline request belongs to these current-head reviews.Model transport and VS Code host/process/DOM boundaries use doubles; real storage, compaction parsing, Ink input, renderer script, controller and NDJSON paths have regression coverage. No live-provider or native VS Code GUI verification. No visual change in the hydration follow-up.
