Setup Guide

This guide takes a new MiniSpeedCam from out-of-the-box to uploading data to your account. You connect to the device's own WiFi network, hand it your home/network WiFi credentials, then claim it to your account with a short code the device shows you.

💡 What changed: older units asked you to paste a "Camera ID" during setup. That step is gone. Each device now generates its own identity on first boot and shows you a Claim Code — you enter that code in the web app to link the device to your account.

Step 1 — What you need

  • A device with WiFi — a laptop, desktop, or tablet is ideal. A phone works, but the configuration UI is cramped on a small screen.
  • Your WiFi network name (SSID) and password.

MiniSpeedCam creates its own temporary WiFi access point for setup. You connect to it, enter your network's credentials, and the device then joins your network on its own.

Step 2 — Create your account

Create your account before setting up the device, so you have somewhere to link it to.

  1. Go to minispeedcam.com, create an account, and sign in.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Cameras.

Keep this tab open — you'll come back to it in Step 5 with your claim code.

Step 3 — Connect to the device

  1. Power on the MiniSpeedCam.
  2. On your laptop/tablet, open the WiFi network list and connect to the device's access point, named MiniSpeedCam-XXXXXX (the XXXXXX is unique to your unit).
  3. Open a browser and go to http://192.168.4.1.

You'll see the device's configuration portal.

Step 4 — Note your Claim Code

On the Device tab, find the field labelled "Claim Code (enter in the app)" and write down the 6-character code (letters and numbers, e.g. K7P2RM).

The claim code is fixed for the life of the device — it's generated once and never changes. The device also prints it on its USB serial console at boot if you ever need to read it again.

Step 5 — Enter your WiFi credentials

  1. Switch to the Wifi Settings tab.
  2. Enter your Network (SSID) and Password.
  3. Click Save Settings.

The device reboots, leaves setup mode, and connects to your WiFi. Your laptop will drop off the MiniSpeedCam-XXXXXX network — reconnect it to your normal WiFi.

Step 6 — Add the device to your account

Back at minispeedcam.com → Cameras, under Add a device:

  1. Type the Claim Code from Step 4 into the "Enter device claim code" box.
  2. Click Add device. You'll see "Device added! It will appear in your list shortly."

The camera then shows up in your list as a card. From there you can:

  • Name it — type into the Camera name field (e.g. MiniSpeedCam-Front).
  • Assign a location and direction (optional) — pick a Camera location (create one first on the Locations tab) and a Camera direction.

This links the physical device to your account (trust-on-first-use — the first device to present that code claims it). The link completes once the device makes its first successful upload; on the device portal the claim-code field then changes to "Linked to your account." The card also shows live status — Device ID, Last seen, Radar signal, Uptime, Firmware versions, and diagnostics — so you can confirm the device is reporting in.

Step 7 — Reach the device on your network

The device no longer uses the 192.168.4.1 setup address once it's on your WiFi. To open its portal again (to change settings, aim the camera, or update firmware):

  • By name (easiest): http://minispeedcam-XXXXXX.local/ — where XXXXXX is the last 6 characters of the Device ID on the camera card (also the suffix of the setup network name). For Device ID F8A976BA2010 that's http://minispeedcam-ba2010.local/. Works on most modern phones and computers via mDNS.
  • By IP: the camera card on minispeedcam.com shows "Camera local IP address" (e.g. 192.168.86.32). Type that address into your browser.

If .local doesn't resolve on your device, just use the IP address.

Step 8 — View your data

Your MiniSpeedCam is now measuring speeds and uploading.

  1. On minispeedcam.com, open Captures in the left sidebar.
  2. Select your camera.
  3. Speed and photo captures are listed below. Click a photo to enlarge and download it.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause / fix
The MiniSpeedCam-XXXXXX network appears, then disappears The device couldn't reach the WiFi you gave it (wrong password, network out of range, antenna issue) and is retrying. Power-cycle it; the setup AP comes back so you can re-enter credentials.
Can't open 192.168.4.1 Make sure you're connected to the device's MiniSpeedCam-XXXXXX network (not your home WiFi) before browsing.
Claim code field never changes to "Linked" The device hasn't made a successful upload yet. Confirm it's on WiFi (Status tab shows an IP) and that you entered the code on minispeedcam.com.
Can't reach the device after setup Try the minispeedcam-XXXXXX.local name; if that fails, use the Camera local IP address from the camera card. Confirm your computer is on the same network as the device.
