It does not make sense to check for validity in the constructor, this adds tons of overhead |
I tend to agree but I'm also a supporter of having more stringent error checking from Python. How could we have our cake and eat it too? In C++ we don't want this overhead. |

Option 3 is probably the best tradeoff — zero overhead in C++, safe from Python. Happy to rework the PR in whichever direction you prefer. |

Reworked per Option 3 — validation now lives entirely in the Python wrapper layer. Changes:

Thanks for the update. I looked at the current CI failures, and they all appear to come from the same issue: the PR branch GitHub is testing still validates the C++ Rot3 matrix constructors directly. The failures are runtime exceptions from the new constructor check: “Rot3 constructor: input matrix is not a valid rotation matrix”. Linux/Windows fail in testSimilarity3, and the Python jobs fail in test_Rot3 and test_Sim3. These tests use rounded Matlab / real-data matrices that are near valid rotations but not exactly orthogonal with determinant +1 under the new tolerance. Historically Rot3(matrix) accepted those inputs, so this changes existing C++ and Python behavior. I also noticed your June 15 comment says this was reworked to Python-wrapper-only validation, which sounds like the right direction. However, the current PR head still appears to be 7c8623b, and the PR diff only changes gtsam/geometry/Rot3.cpp and Rot3.h. So CI is still testing the version that adds validation to the C++ constructors. I think the fix is to remove validation from the C++ constructors, keep any invalid-input check only in the Python binding path, and add a focused Python test for the originally reported bad input. If the intent is instead to make all C++ Rot3(matrix) construction strict, then several existing tests and likely downstream code would need to switch to exactly orthonormal matrices or Rot3::ClosestTo(...), which seems like a larger behavior change than this PR should make. |
