Why

A Langfuse dataset is the unit of experiment comparison — Langfuse only compares runs within one dataset. That makes one dataset the right place to keep every variant of a question (its locales, say), and splitting them into ..._en / ..._es datasets the wrong answer, because the variants then land on charts that can never be compared.

Two things stopped that working:

  • load_langfuse_dataset takes no item filter, so the only way to run one locale was to dispatch all 48 items.
  • DatasetItem is extra="ignore" with no metadata field, so the item metadata saying which locale an item is was discarded on load. You cannot filter on what was already dropped.

Separately, run_metadata_extra is plumbed end-to-end into the Langfuse dataset-run metadata but grep -c run_metadata_extra cli/main.py → 0: no way in from the CLI.

What

DatasetItem.metadata carries the source's own item metadata through verbatim. test_kind / summary_input / user_context are still read out into their own fields by the loader; this is the rest of it.
load_langfuse_dataset(item_ids=, metadata_filter=) narrows after the fetch — the dataset-items endpoint selects by dataset but not by item id or metadata. Given both, an item must satisfy both.
DatasetItemNotFoundError an id the dataset does not have raises, naming what is missing. Returning the ids that did exist means asking for twelve items, evaluating nine, and having that read downstream as a pass-rate change.
--langfuse-item-id ITEM_ID repeatable.
--langfuse-item-metadata KEY=VALUE repeatable, ANDed, compared as strings (the CLI side is always a string, the item side may be an int or a bool).
--run-metadata-json PATH JSON object merged into the dataset-run metadata. Non-object payload rejected up front — run metadata merges key by key, so a list would be dropped after the run had already cost its agent calls.

With a local dataset folder the two item filters are refused, not ignored — a run that quietly evaluated the whole folder after being asked for one language would be reported as that language's pass rate.

No behaviour change without the flags

An unfiltered load passes None, not an empty container — an empty tuple reaching item_ids would select zero items and raise, turning every existing unfiltered run into an error. Covered by a regression test asserting the loader call arguments are byte-identical to today's, and by the ({}, (), None) case on the run-metadata merge.

Verification

Full suite 1880 passed, 1 skipped; ruff and mypy clean.

Live, against mastercard_search_tool (48 items, 12 per locale):

no filter : 48 Counter({'en': 12, 'fr': 12, 'pt': 12, 'es': 12})
metadata en : 12
metadata es : 12

                   'workspace_id': 'micai_diagnose_master', 'git_sha': 'efb173f1...'}
item_ids : ['where-can-i-see-my-auth-spend-by-response-codes']
unknown id : Langfuse dataset 'mastercard_search_tool' has no item(s) with id: nope-123

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Filter Langfuse evaluation runs by one or more item IDs and metadata key/value pairs. Filters can be combined, and unknown IDs or filters that select no items return an error.
    • Add JSON metadata to Langfuse dataset runs. Supplied tags take precedence over a tags value in the JSON metadata.
  • Documentation
    • Documented the new filtering and run-metadata options, including their requirements and validation behavior.

A Langfuse dataset is the unit of experiment comparison: Langfuse only compares runs
within one dataset. That makes it the right place to keep every variant of a question --
its locales, for instance -- and the wrong place to split them, since splitting puts the
variants on charts that can never be compared. But `load_langfuse_dataset` had no filter,
so the only way to run one locale was a dispatch of the whole dataset, and `DatasetItem`
was `extra="ignore"` with no metadata field, so the item metadata that says which locale
an item is was discarded on load. You could not filter on what had already been dropped.

So:

- `DatasetItem.metadata` carries the source's own item metadata through verbatim.
`test_kind`, `summary_input` and `user_context` are still read out into their own
fields by the loader; this is the rest of it.
- `load_langfuse_dataset(..., item_ids=, metadata_filter=)` narrows after the fetch --
the dataset-items endpoint selects by dataset but not by item id or metadata. The fetch
costs the same either way; what the filters save is evaluating an item against a live
agent. Given both, an item must satisfy both.
- An id the dataset does not have raises `DatasetItemNotFoundError` naming what is
missing, rather than returning the ids that did exist: asking for twelve items and
evaluating nine, silently, reads downstream as a pass-rate change.
- `--langfuse-item-id` and `--langfuse-item-metadata KEY=VALUE` expose both, repeatable.
With a local dataset folder they are refused, not ignored, for the same reason.
- `--run-metadata-json PATH` reaches the existing `run_metadata_extra` path, which was
plumbed end-to-end into the dataset-run metadata but had no way in from the CLI. Per
run, not per item. A non-object payload is rejected up front, since run metadata merges
key by key and a list would be dropped after the run had already cost its agent calls.

No behaviour change for a caller using none of them: an unfiltered load passes `None`
rather than an empty container, which would otherwise select zero items and raise.

Verified against the live `mastercard_search_tool` dataset (48 items, 12 per locale):
unfiltered 48, `language=en` 12, `language=es` 12, a single id 1, an unknown id raises.

📝 Walkthrough

The CLI adds repeatable Langfuse item ID and metadata filters, plus JSON run metadata. The loader applies filters after fetching dataset items. The agentic runner merges run metadata with explicit tags.

Changes: Langfuse Evaluation Options

Layer / File(s) Summary
Dataset metadata and filtering
packages/gooddata-eval/src/gooddata_eval/core/models.py, packages/gooddata-eval/src/gooddata_eval/core/dataset/langfuse_source.py, packages/gooddata-eval/tests/test_langfuse_source.py
DatasetItem retains dictionary-valued source metadata. The Langfuse loader filters items by ID and metadata, reports missing IDs, and raises an error when no items match. Tests cover metadata preservation, filtering, and errors.
CLI item-filter options
packages/gooddata-eval/src/gooddata_eval/core/config.py, packages/gooddata-eval/src/gooddata_eval/cli/main.py, packages/gooddata-eval/tests/test_cli_langfuse_flags.py, packages/gooddata-eval/README.md
The CLI accepts repeatable item IDs and metadata pairs. It requires --langfuse-dataset for item filters and passes the filters to the loader. The README describes the options and their client-side filtering behavior.
Run metadata parsing and forwarding
packages/gooddata-eval/src/gooddata_eval/cli/main.py, packages/gooddata-eval/src/gooddata_eval/cli/agentic_runner.py, packages/gooddata-eval/tests/test_cli_langfuse_flags.py, packages/gooddata-eval/tests/test_agentic_runner.py, packages/gooddata-eval/README.md
The CLI accepts run metadata from a JSON object and passes it to the agentic runner. Explicit tags replace a tags value in that metadata. Tests and the README cover parsing and merging behavior.

Dataset selection and run annotations expand the public interface, but the inspected flow does not grant additional credentials or workspace access. Limited visibility into external ingestion and recovery keeps the assessment at low risk.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected exposure is bounded by the configured Langfuse credentials and the separately supplied GoodData host, token and workspace. Selectors narrow evaluated items but not fetched data. Run metadata adds operator-controlled information to external telemetry without selecting a different endpoint, credential or workspace in the inspected flow.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Experiment identity attributes are constructed separately from metadata, whose keys receive the fixed langfuse.experiment.metadata prefix. Trace-join baggage uses explicit run, dataset, item and conversation identities rather than caller metadata. Nonempty explicit tags override a metadata tags value; derived model version and reasoning effort override corresponding metadata keys when available.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing runner separates parallel-safe evaluation from workspace-mutating evaluation, drains trace-linking tasks on completion and abandons queued tasks on interruption. Deferred scoring copies resolved metadata and releases conversation joins in a finally block. Export failures are warning-only, so external experiment state can remain partial. These mechanisms predate the PR; the new metadata flow does not provide stronger transactional or recovery guarantees.

Keep the metadata comment focused on the live invariant.

The comment narrates prior behavior, which violates the repository rule. The loader also retains the raw metadata dictionary; modeled fields are not removed from it.

Suggested fix
- # The source's own item metadata, carried through verbatim. A Langfuse dataset item can
- # hold whatever its publisher put there -- language, complexity, workspace id, the git
- # revision the fixture was published from -- and `extra="ignore"` above used to drop all
- # of it on load, so a caller could neither select on it nor report it. Not interpreted
- # here: `test_kind`, `summary_input` and `user_context` are still read out into their own
- # fields by the loader, and this is the rest of it.
+    # Source metadata is opaque to evaluators. Fields derived from it are exposed separately;
+ # the source metadata dictionary remains intact for selection and reporting.

Forward run metadata to non-agentic Langfuse runs.

run_metadata is passed only to run_agentic_items. The standard run_items path creates LangfuseSink without this metadata. Therefore, --run-metadata-json silently has no effect for visualization or other non-agentic items logged with --langfuse.

Pass the metadata through LangfuseSink and merge it into the ExperimentRun metadata while preserving the existing automatic-field precedence.

Reject duplicate metadata keys before building RunConfig.

dict(args.langfuse_item_metadata) overwrites earlier values for the same key. For example, language=en followed by language=fr silently becomes {"language": "fr"}. Reject conflicting duplicate keys or define explicit multi-value semantics before constructing RunConfig.
