Description

Hi!

I noticed the Agentic-AI-Pipeline server doesn't seem to have application monitoring wired (yet), so I added it using mAPI-ng, a lightweight API monitoring tool I'm developing.

The integration provides endpoint-level traffic, error rates, latency percentiles, and request/response sizes.

This PR is safe to merge as-is: without a MAPING_KEY, the integration stays inactive and doesn't affect the application.

If you'd like to try it, MAPING has a free tier with no credit card required. Creating an account at mapi-ng.com gives you the MAPING_KEY needed to enable monitoring.

Changes:

  • Add the MAPING Python client (declared in both pyproject.toml and requirements.txt, which mirror each other)
  • Configure MAPING monitoring for the FastAPI app in src/agentic_ai/app.py
  • Read the ingest key from the MAPING_KEY environment variable
  • Remain inactive when MAPING_KEY isn't configured (the middleware wrap is skipped entirely)

Type of change

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Breaking change
  • Documentation update

How Has This Been Tested?

  • Unit tests
  • Integration tests
  • Manual testing

Ran the existing test suite locally (pytest, 8 passed). Then ran the app with a MAPING_KEY set, generated traffic against /health, /, /api/new_chat, static routes and a 404, and verified the client's Register and Upload calls both returned HTTP 200 with no transport errors. Also verified the app starts and serves normally with no MAPING_KEY set (integration inactive).

agentic_ai_pipeline_maping

To reproduce: pip install -r requirements.txt, run the server as usual; optionally set MAPING_KEY to enable monitoring.

Checklist

  • My code follows the style guidelines of this project
  • I have performed a self-review of my own code
  • I have commented my code, particularly in hard-to-understand areas (no comments needed: the diff is 14 lines following the standard FastAPI lifespan/middleware pattern)
  • I have made corresponding changes to the documentation (none: opt-in integration, inactive by default; happy to add a README section if you want the feature documented)
  • My changes generate no new warnings
  • I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my feature works (no new tests: the integration is a no-op without MAPING_KEY; existing tests cover the app unchanged)
  • New and existing unit tests pass locally with my changes
  • No secrets or credentials committed

Notes

Full disclosure: I'm the author of MAPING.

What I'm mainly looking for is feedback from real projects: whether the integration is useful, what feels awkward, and what's missing.

The hosted service isn't required: MAPING can also be fully self-hosted with all features available, so adopting the client doesn't lock the project into mapi-ng.com.

If monitoring isn't relevant to this project, feel free to close the PR, no worries.

Submitted under this project's existing license (Apache-2.0), matching the rest of the diff.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added optional application activity recording and monitoring when configured.
    • Integrated recording into application startup and shutdown handling.
    • Monitoring can be enabled through application configuration without changing normal operation when disabled.
  • Improvements

    • Improved application integration with monitoring services.
    • Updated API schema generation to remain consistent whether monitoring is enabled or disabled.
    • Improved compatibility with supported monitoring client versions.

Walkthrough

The project bounds the maping-client dependency and integrates a shared Maping recorder into the FastAPI lifespan. When MAPING_KEY is set, app uses MapingMiddleware, while fastapi_app remains available for OpenAPI export.

Changes

Maping observability integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Maping dependency and application wiring
pyproject.toml, requirements.txt, src/agentic_ai/app.py
The project bounds maping-client to >=0.1.1,<0.2.0 and imports the Maping recorder, middleware, and environment-variable support.
Recorder lifecycle and middleware integration
src/agentic_ai/app.py
The application starts the recorder during startup and stops it during teardown. When MAPING_KEY is set, app is wrapped with MapingMiddleware.
OpenAPI export access
scripts/export_openapi.py
The export script generates the schema from fastapi_app instead of the potentially wrapped app.
Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 7a82e

The opt-in monitoring integration remains inactive without MAPING_KEY and introduces no actionable merge-blocking risk; it is merge-ready after normal checks and review.

Bound the maping-client version consistently. Both pyproject.toml and requirements.txt currently allow future releases through >=0.1.1. Pin the tested version or add a compatible upper bound in both manifests.

Run recorder.shutdown() in a finally block so it still flushes on exceptional or cancelled lifespan teardown.
Keep the FastAPI instance under a stable fastapi_app symbol and point export_openapi.py at it, so app.openapi() works with MAPING_KEY set.
Bound maping-client below 0.2.0 in pyproject.toml and requirements.txt.
