Workflow linting now runs jactionlint v2 with its default profile, which includes the security audits the separate zizmor job ran. The zizmor job is gone, so one command covers both.

To check or fix workflows locally:

hk check --all --step jactionlint # or: jactionlint
hk fix --all --step jactionlint # applies jactionlint --fix

What changed

  • jactionlint is pinned to 2 in mise.toml (lockfile refreshed, same platforms).
  • The hk step runs jactionlint {{ files }} as the check and jactionlint --fix {{ files }} as the fix, and also covers .github/actions/**/action.y*ml and .github/dependabot.y*ml.
  • The zizmor job is removed from test.yml, together with its entry in the final gate and the ZIZMOR_RESULT check. Nothing else in the repo ran zizmor.
  • The two # zizmor: ignore[dangerous-triggers] comments (draft-limit.yml, perf-pr.yml) were converted with jactionlint --migrate-ignores, keeping their explanations. The four # zizmor: ignore[cache-poisoning] comments on Swatinem/rust-cache were stale (jactionlint reports nothing there without them), so they are deleted.

Findings fixed

The default profile reported 16 findings (7 concurrency-limits, 3 missing-timeout, 3 missing-permissions, 3 pipeline-without-pipefail). It now reports 0.

  • jactionlint --fix added concurrency: to 3 workflows.
  • By hand: concurrency: on aube-lock.yml, mise-lock.yml, comment-release-fixes.yml (cancel-in-progress: false, since it runs on releases) and test.yml; timeout-minutes: 10 on three jobs; permissions: contents: read on test-impl.yml; set -o pipefail in the three scripts that pipe into gh, tail or sort.
  • The concurrency group that was in test-impl.yml moved to its caller test.yml with the same group (${{ github.workflow }}-${{ github.ref }}) and cancel-in-progress: true, because the rule wants it on a workflow whose jobs only call a reusable one. Cancellation behaves as before.

Nothing is ignored in .github/jactionlint.yaml and zizmor is not kept.

The aube-lock.yml and mise-lock.yml caller workflows now use the group ${{ github.workflow }}-caller-${{ github.ref }}. The shared workflows from jdx/renovate-config set their own job-level groups (aube-lock-<ref>, mise-lock-<ref>), and inside a called workflow github.workflow is the caller's name, so an equal caller group would cancel the called job instantly. Every other added concurrency group was checked against its callees.

Update: jactionlint 2.1.0 and online checks in CI only. jactionlint stays on latest in mise.toml and the lock is refreshed to 2.1.0. The CI lint step (mise r lint) sets JACTIONLINT_ONLINE=1 and GITHUB_TOKEN, so CI also checks action refs against GitHub while local hooks stay offline; the online run found nothing. The new excessive-permissions findings are fixed: aube-lock.yml and release-plz.yml now set permissions: {} at the workflow level and grant their write scopes on the job. To run the online checks locally: JACTIONLINT_ONLINE=1 hk check --all.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Chores
    • Updated automated checks and release workflows to manage overlapping runs more consistently, including canceling superseded runs in selected workflows.
    • Limited write access to the specific jobs that need it and set time limits for selected jobs.
    • Improved error detection in performance-related scripts and enabled online checks for workflow linting.
    • Updated test-result handling so final status depends on the trusted and untrusted test results.

Note

Low Risk
CI and workflow YAML/hk config only; no application runtime or auth logic changes, though branch protection no longer waits on a dedicated zizmor job.

Overview
Workflow linting moves from a separate zizmor CI job to jactionlint v2 (lockfile 2.1.0), run via hk during mise r lint with online checks in CI (JACTIONLINT_ONLINE=1). The zizmor job and its gate in test.yml are removed; stale # zizmor: ignore[cache-poisoning] comments on rust-cache are dropped, and dangerous-trigger suppressions are migrated to # jactionlint ignore=....

hk expands the jactionlint step to composite actions and Dependabot configs and adds a jactionlint --fix fix target.

GitHub Actions are updated to satisfy jactionlint’s default security/profile rules: concurrency (including caller-specific groups for aube-lock / mise-lock so reusable workflows aren’t cancelled), job timeouts, least-privilege permissions (e.g. release-plz, lock workflows), concurrency on test.yml (moved off test-impl.yml), and set -o pipefail in perf/git note scripts that pipe to gh or other commands.

Walkthrough

GitHub Actions workflows now use updated concurrency controls and job-level permission scopes. Lint checks, test-result conditions, job timeouts, and shell pipeline failure handling also changed.

CI workflow updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow run coordination
.github/workflows/{draft-limit,link-discussion,mise-lock,perf-pr-preflight,test,comment-release-fixes,aube-lock,test-impl}.yml
Several workflows add concurrency groups and cancellation rules. test-impl removes its workflow-level concurrency setting and adds read-only contents permission. aube-lock adds caller-specific concurrency and changes workflow-level permissions. draft-limit also changes its dangerous-trigger lint directive.
Job-scoped write permissions
.github/workflows/{aube-lock,release-plz}.yml
aube-lock and release-plz declare write permissions on their jobs instead of at workflow level.
Lint checks and test-result conditions
.github/workflows/{perf-pr,size,test-impl,test}.yml
Lint directives and online lint inputs change, and cache-warning suppressions are removed. The test workflow removes the zizmor job and checks only the trusted and untrusted results.
Job timeouts and pipeline failure handling
.github/workflows/{link-discussion,perf-pr-preflight,perf-pr,perf}.yml
Three jobs gain 10-minute timeouts. Listed shell scripts enable pipefail.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 59682

The changed workflows preserve the selected test suite’s success gate and scope write permissions to the jobs that need them. No concrete merge-blocking failure was established; the full overlap between the old and new lint audit sets remains unverified.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[High impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new blocking issue was found.

Summary

Workflow checks move to jactionlint v2, replacing the separate zizmor job.

  • Workflow linting and security checks now run through jactionlint v2.
  • Related workflow runs now share groups with clear cancellation rules.
  • Workflow jobs now have bounded time and scoped access.
  • Performance scripts now fail when a command in a pipeline fails.

Online workflow checks never run

Medium Severity

JACTIONLINT_ONLINE does not turn on jactionlint's GitHub-API audits. Those rules run only when the --online flag is passed, and hk still invokes jactionlint without it, so CI stays on the offline profile after zizmor was removed.

JACTIONLINT_ONLINE is a documented setting in jactionlint 2.1.0 (added in jdx/jactionlint#155; see "Online checks" in https://github.com/jdx/jactionlint/blob/main/docs/usage.md). It acts like --online (1 = on, cache/strict/cache,strict = modes, 0/false/off/no = off like --no-online); the flags beat the variable and the variable beats online: in the config file. jactionlint --help lists it under --online, and this repo's mise.lock installs 2.1.0.

I checked with the real binary: JACTIONLINT_ONLINE=1 GITHUB_TOKEN=... jactionlint --verbose <workflow> prints online: using the token from $GITHUB_TOKEN for api.github.com. hk runs the command with the step's environment, so setting it on the hk step enables the online audits without --online in hk.pkl, which is intentional: local pre-commit runs stay offline. No change needed.
