Summary

Off Grid Desktop's gateway serves plain HTTP on the LAN (http://<ip>:7878) and now supports optional API keys. Mobile only sent a saved key over HTTPS, so once a desktop user turned keys on, every request from the phone got 401. This change makes the key work from the phone:

  • Now sent over LAN HTTP: a saved key goes to every endpoint the app already accepts. That is HTTPS anywhere, plus HTTP only on private LAN, .local, single-label or Tailscale addresses. Public cleartext is still rejected before any request starts.
  • Guards kept:
    • Automatic discovery never moves a saved key onto a newly discovered HTTP address, since that would let a spoofed device collect it.
    • HTTPS→HTTP redirects are still refused.
  • Error copy: a 401/403 now reports "The server rejected the API key" instead of the old HTTPS-only message.
  • Specialist guard: a new test confirms Desktop's computer-use specialists (catalog kind computer_use) are never offered as chat models, even when /v1/models lists them as chat or vision. Current code already excludes them; the test pins that.

This is part of the cross-repo release on fix/remote-inference-engine-updates (desktop, desktop-pro, mobile).

Type of Change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • Refactor (code change that neither fixes a bug nor adds a feature)
  • Chore (build process, CI, dependency updates, etc.)

Screenshots / Screen Recordings

No UI change; this changes request headers and error copy.

Checklist

General

  • My code follows the project's coding style and conventions
  • I have performed a self-review of my code
  • I have added/updated comments where the logic isn't self-evident
  • My changes generate no new warnings or errors (ESLint is clean on the changed files; no tsc errors in them)

Testing

  • I have tested on Android (physical device or emulator). Not done: needs a device check against a desktop with keys on.
  • I have tested on iOS (physical device or simulator). Not done, same as above.
  • I have tested in light mode and dark mode. Not applicable.
  • Existing tests pass locally (npm test), jest part only. Full jest with the pro submodule passes, except 4 tests in releaseScriptsE that fail only on Linux because the release scripts use BSD sed -i '' and mktemp. They pass on macOS and are unrelated. Native Android/iOS tests were not run.
  • I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or my feature works

Tests changed to the new rule:

  • remoteTransportPolicy (unit)
  • keyedHttpServer
  • remoteSavedKey
  • privateHttpSavedKey.rendered
  • remoteMediaRuntime

They use contract-faithful fakes at the fetch boundary. The specialist guard was added to desktopToolCapabilities.integration.

React Native Specific

  • No new native module without corresponding platform implementation (Android + iOS)
  • New native modules are added to the Xcode project build target (project.pbxproj). None added.
  • No hardcoded pixel values. No UI changes.
  • Styles use useThemedStyles pattern. No UI changes.
  • Animations/gestures work smoothly on both platforms. Not applicable.
  • Large lists use FlatList / FlashList. Not applicable.
  • No unnecessary re-renders introduced

Performance & Models

  • Downloads / long-running tasks report progress to the UI. Not applicable.
  • File paths are resolved correctly on both platforms. Not applicable.
  • Large files (models, assets) are not committed to the repository

Security

  • No secrets, API keys, or credentials are included in the code
  • User input is validated/sanitized where applicable. Endpoint validation is unchanged.

Security trade-off (approved by the product owner): on private LAN and Tailscale HTTP, the key travels unencrypted on the local network. Public cleartext endpoints still never receive it.

Related Issues

Relates to off-grid-ai/OGAD#195 (desktop gateway API keys).

Additional Notes

Phones on v0.0.111 or v0.0.114-beta.1 still won't send keys over HTTP. Users who turn on desktop gateway keys need the release that includes this change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Saved API keys are now sent to private-network and Tailscale servers over HTTP, allowing keyed servers to authenticate requests.
    • When a server rejects a key, the connection reports the server’s authentication error rather than an HTTPS-only warning.
    • Public HTTP endpoints remain subject to the existing security restriction.

Dependency verification

The lockfile refresh updates compatible JavaScript dependencies, including navigation, Zustand, Babel, and test tools. React Native and locally patched native packages keep their tested versions; the newest Reanimated requires a newer React Native and is not compatible with this release. Mobile Pro now points to current main (c15e454b), with no source difference from the previous pin.

A clean locked install, TypeScript check, and 32 focused navigation and saved-key tests pass. Native device checks were not run in this update. Current-head CI passed before merge: 751 JavaScript suites (8,338 tests passed, 5 skipped), Android tests, iOS simulator tests, lint, types, architecture, and security checks.

CI follow-up: the storage test now restarts hydration after the current Zustand API cancels a pending read on clearStorage. All three storage assertions pass. The full saved-voice model residency journey uses the same 30-second limit as nearby voice journeys and passes in a focused run. The full local suite found only these two failures before their fixes; hosted CI then passed on the final commit.

…ys work from the phone

Off Grid Desktop serves its gateway as plain HTTP on the LAN. With gateway
API keys turned on, the phone never sent its saved key there (keys were
HTTPS-only), so every desktop request got 401. The key now goes to every
endpoint the app accepts: HTTPS anywhere, HTTP only on private LAN or
Tailscale addresses. Discovery still never moves a saved key onto a newly
found HTTP address, and HTTPS-to-HTTP redirects are still refused.

Adds a guard that Desktop's computer-use specialists are never offered as
chat models.

📝 Walkthrough

Remote requests now send saved API keys to accepted private HTTP endpoints. Endpoint checks and model discovery retain server rejection details for authentication failures. The PR also updates tests for private HTTP authentication, desktop model filtering, and other test behavior.

Changes: Remote HTTP authentication

Layer / File(s) Summary
Credential transport and rejection handling
src/services/remoteTransportPolicy.ts, src/services/httpClientUtils.ts, src/stores/remoteServerHelpers.ts
Requests include a bearer token when an API key is present. HTTP 401 and 403 responses retain server rejection details during endpoint checks and model discovery.
Credential and discovery test coverage
__tests__/integration/remote/*, __tests__/unit/services/remote*
Tests cover credentials on private-LAN and Tailscale HTTP endpoints, open servers, model discovery, and rejected credentials.

Desktop specialist model filtering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Computer-use specialist filtering test
__tests__/integration/models/desktopToolCapabilities.integration.test.ts
The integration test checks that installed computer-use specialists reported as chat or vision models do not appear in text model results. It also checks that an ordinary chat model remains present.

Supporting test updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Test setup and subproject reference
__tests__/integration/audio/speakAfterVoiceModelUnload.rendered.test.tsx, __tests__/unit/utils/hydrationGatedStorage.test.ts, pro
The voice-model integration test now uses a 30-second timeout. The hydration test explicitly calls rehydrate() after clearStorage(). The subproject reference changed.

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Do not send a key to a single-label host without verifying its destination.

If a saved endpoint is http://desktop, a DNS search path can resolve desktop to a public host. validateRemoteEndpoint accepts the name before resolution, and this line then sends the key over public HTTP. A rogue network can supply a search path that directs an unqualified name to its domain. For credentialed HTTP, restrict names to destinations whose private address is verified and used for the connection, or require a literal allowed IP address. (developer.android.com)

Make the cancellation assertion independent of the follow-up rehydrate.

^5.0.10 permits Zustand 5.0.10, where clearStorage() does not invalidate an in-flight hydration. The added rehydrate() increments the hydration version itself, so the test can pass even when clearStorage() did not cancel the original read.

Raise the minimum Zustand version and assert that the gate remains unhydrated before calling rehydrate().
