Check for new models without an app release, and engines that stay up to date - #730
Conversation
…models.json shows up without an app update The app ships with its bundled lists and fetches the remote catalog only when the person taps the refresh icon on the Models screen; launch reads the copy a previous check saved. Remote entries add or replace bundled ones by key (text, speech, Core ML, LiteRT) and never remove one. Fetch, parse and merge are @offgrid/models; the app supplies fetch, AsyncStorage and the screens.
…only after a relaunch The React Compiler memoized the merged list on its arguments, which never change, so the screen kept the old list. The hook now passes the subscribed catalog section into the merge.

Reduce GITHUB_TOKEN to read-only access.
The checkout, push, and pull-request steps use PRO_SUBMODULE_PAT, not GITHUB_TOKEN, for writes. The declared contents: write and pull-requests: write scopes therefore give code in this job unnecessary write access. Keep only the read access needed by the job. GitHub recommends read-only default permissions for this reason. (docs.github.com)
Based on learnings, set each workflow’s effective GITHUB_TOKEN permissions to the minimum scopes its steps need.

Do not retain the PAT during dependency installation.
actions/checkout@v4 persists its token for later Git commands unless persist-credentials: false is set. This checkout uses PRO_SUBMODULE_PAT, then the job runs npm ci and package build scripts. Code executed by those commands can read the persisted credential; a compromised dependency could exfiltrate a PAT that also accesses the other checked-out repositories. Use the repository token for the initial checkout with credential persistence disabled, and supply the PAT only to the final push and pull-request operations. (github.com)

Filter Maven releases to stable versions.
mavenRelease returns <release> or <latest> without checking semver.prerelease(). If Maven metadata reports a pre-release in either field, decide can classify it as a bump and pin that version. Select the highest stable version from <versions> instead.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Fail the check when the Gradle pin is missing.
gradlePin returns null when build.gradle no longer has a literal group:artifact:version string. This can happen if someone moves the version into a variable or a version catalog.
decide treats a null current as "no pin" and returns bump. Then applyMaven calls setGradlePin, whose regex does not match, so it rewrites the file unchanged. The CLI reports the engine as changed and writes no change. scripts/uat.sh prints a warning with null → <version>. The weekly job reports a bump that never happens.
Throw instead. The existing catch in main then reports the engine as "could not check".
