Add a blog post announcing that FTP access to ftp.osuosl.org and the other mirror hostnames turns off on Tuesday, December 15, 2026 at 9:00 AM PST.

The status.io notice, hosting-list email and Fosstodon post for this change are short, so they link here for the longer explanation. The post leads with the mirrors and every hostname staying, so it doesn't read as the cluster being retired. Only the ftp:// protocol goes away.

It tells readers what to switch to. Downloads move to HTTPS at the same /pub/ paths on ftp.osuosl.org, because project names on other domains don't have their own certificates yet. Mirrors that sync over FTP move to rsync.osuosl.org, with a note that a missing rsync module can be requested through support. It also explains the technical reasons and links the kernel.org, Debian, Chrome and Firefox precedents.

  • Add content/blog/ftp-protocol-retirement.md, served at /blog/ftp-protocol-retirement/
  • Date the post 2026-10-13, and bump the date if it merges later and should show the publish day

This needs to be live before the status.io notice goes out, since the notice links to it and can't be edited once posted.

FTP (ftp://) goes off on the OSL mirrors on Tuesday, December 15, 2026 at
9:00 AM PST. The status.io notice, hosting-list email and Fosstodon post link
here for the longer explanation.

- Lead with the mirrors and hostnames staying, so it doesn't read as the
  cluster being retired
- Point HTTPS users at the same /pub/ paths on ftp.osuosl.org, since project
names on other domains don't have certificates yet
- Send FTP mirrors to rsync.osuosl.org, and say how to request a missing
  rsync module
- Explain the technical reasons and link the kernel.org, Debian, Chrome and
  Firefox precedents

ArtofBugs' review on #114 asked for the date to lead, the repeated list to go,
and a title that names the protocol rather than a host.

- Open with the December 15 shutoff, then say only FTP is affected and the
mirrors, the ftp.osuosl.org name and every file stay
- Drop the "What isn't changing" list, which repeated the new lead
- Retitle to "Turning Off FTP Protocol Access to Our Mirrors"; the URL is
  unchanged
- Date the post 2026-10-14
