Advances #17 for CRuby / --target ruby only — does not close the umbrella.

Summary

Tip already ships WAL + pool + write permit + off-path WAL checkpoints for every RH CRuby app (db_cruby.rb + overlay config.ru). This PR folds two remaining generalizable gaps (not Campfire-app code):

  1. PRAGMA cache_size=-65536 + mmap_size=268435456 on every pooled open — Spinel's measured knobs; tip CRuby inherited SQLite defaults (cache_size=-2000, mmap_size=0).
  2. Cross-process checkpoint flock so only one of N WEB_CONCURRENCY workers copies the WAL — the unique bit from once-campfire#319 / #313. Core of CRuby emit: derive Makefile test names from the first app emission instead of re-emitting the whole app #319 (wal_autocheckpoint=0 + PASSIVE @ 250ms) was already in tip. Flock is held for the inner loop; :busy skips, lock-setup failure still checkpoints. Fork children close the inherited lock FD without LOCK_UN so a surviving worker can take over after the parent exits.

Campfire preview A/B (RH ruby main runtime vs this branch)

Same emit tree, runtime/db.rb swapped. App: roundhouse-rb/once-campfire preview 9fdf7da. Recipe: --http-suite --gzip --no-sockets, warmup 4, duration 8, runs 2, c=16, lane ruby only (3 workers × 5 threads, jemalloc). Means of 2 runs. Head: 15befcd8. Baseline runtime: upstream/main @ 21df415d. Raw: store internal/bench-raw/preview-http-pr548-ab2/.

Parity: all GETs 200, matching tags (3962 / 3695 / 351 / 3867). wrk cells had no Non-2xx. POST p99 69.9 ms (main) vs 63.8 ms (PR).

Honest read: within run noise on this box; no POST/WAL throughput claim. Same conclusion as the pre-fork-fix round. The flock is a multi-worker correctness slice (one PASSIVE, not N), not a wrk-c=16 GET win. mmap/cache also did not move the suite.

Campfire #313/#319

Piece Tip before this PR
Off-path PASSIVE checkpoint Already in checkpoint_in_background!
wal_autocheckpoint=0 on serving conns Already
RESTART when log huge Already (RH ahead of #319)
Cross-process flock This PR
Resque after_prefork Campfire-only — not folded

Test plan

  • cargo test --test db_sqlite_concurrency — pragmas, exclusive flock (:busy vs nil setup failure), inherited flock closed on adopt_after_fork, prior permit/snapshot/checkpoint cases
  • Campfire preview A/B table above (15befcd8)

CodeRabbit

  • FD leak on raising flock + lock setup vs contention → 0c97c924 (resolved)
  • Close inherited checkpoint lock in forked children without LOCK_UN → 15befcd8 (resolved)

Out of scope

Crystal/elixir/python inventory rows; Kotlin/Swift ThreadLocal WAL; other perf themes (#12 binds, MemoryStore, hydrator).

Tip already had WAL, pool, write permit, and off-path PASSIVE/RESTART
checkpoints for every --target ruby app. Two remaining generalizable
gaps:

- Apply cache_size=-65536 and mmap_size=256MiB on every pooled open
(Spinel's measured knobs; tip CRuby still inherited SQLite defaults).
- Non-blocking flock around the background checkpoint tick so only one
WEB_CONCURRENCY worker copies the WAL (Campfire once-campfire#319's
piece RH did not yet share).

Pin with db_sqlite_concurrency tests for the pragmas and exclusive
flock. Correct a stale Spinel comment that claimed CRuby left
synchronous unset.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

CRuby SQLite connections now set cache and mmap values. The checkpoint loop uses a database-specific lock file to coordinate checkpoint ticks across processes. New tests cover the connection settings and lock behavior.

Changes

SQLite runtime changes

Layer / File(s) Summary
SQLite connection settings
runtime/spinel/db_cruby.rb, runtime/spinel/db.rb, tests/db_sqlite_concurrency.rs
Connections set cache_size=-65536 and mmap_size=268435456. The PRAGMA comments describe explicit synchronous=NORMAL and WAL settings. A test checks the connection values.
Checkpoint locking
runtime/spinel/db_cruby.rb, tests/db_sqlite_concurrency.rs
The checkpoint loop uses a database-specific lock file and a nonblocking exclusive flock. It retries when another process holds the lock, runs PASSIVE checkpoints at each interval, and runs RESTART when the frame threshold is reached and the write permit is acquired. It releases the lock after checkpointing or errors. Tests cover cross-process locking, setup failure, and fork adoption.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 15bef

This change adds SQLite cache and mmap settings and coordinates WAL checkpointing across processes with a file lock. The supplied evidence shows no concrete merge-blocking risk, and tests cover the main lock and fork behavior.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0c97c

The change does not introduce a remote entrypoint, but checkpoint availability now depends on an adjacent lock file. If an untrusted local process can open and hold that lock, it could suppress checkpoints across workers. Deployment permissions and platform behavior determine whether this conditional exposure is reachable.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new lock file can become a checkpoint-denial authority on native Linux filesystems if an untrusted local principal can open it. Creation requests mode 0644, subject to umask; a read-only opener can hold an exclusive advisory flock without database-write permission. Participating workers then repeatedly skip checkpointing while serving connections have autocheckpoints disabled, allowing sustained writes to grow the WAL and threaten database-service availability. Private directory permissions can prevent this attack, but deployed permissions are unknown.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The conditional lock-denial impact spans all participating workers using the same database-sidecar identity. The demonstrated coordination scope is a configured SQLite database, not an established cross-service or cross-tenant boundary.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A local principal able to traverse the database directory and read the sidecar could, under native Linux flock semantics, hold its exclusive advisory lock. The :busy branch would then suppress checkpoint execution for the duration of that hold. Sustained writes could grow the WAL; deployed reachability and resulting resource exhaustion have not been verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Filesystem access to the coordination file is a control boundary for checkpoint availability. The runtime's RDWR open governs its own descriptor, not how another process opens the file. Owner-private directory permissions or a restrictive effective file mode can contain the conditional local attack.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Ordinary lock-setup failures close partial resources and preserve unlocked checkpoint execution, matching the base's lack of cross-process serialization. Successful acquisitions are released after checkpoint-body failure, and RESTART releases the write permit through ensure. These controls do not recover from a competing holder that remains alive and keeps its lock.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep the coordination file within an explicitly trusted filesystem boundary: use owner-private permissions, validate ownership and permissions of existing files, and define how any intentionally shared worker identities receive access. Validate contention and recovery on supported filesystems, including a read-only hostile holder and acquisition-time interruption.

CodeRabbit on #548: File.open then a raising flock leaked the
descriptor, and try_checkpoint_lock treated mkdir/open errors the
same as a held lock — skipping the tick forever after
wal_autocheckpoint=0. Close the file on the error path; return
:busy only for LOCK_NB contention and nil for setup failure so
checkpoint_loop still copies the WAL. Hold the flock for the
inner loop (Campfire #319), not per tick.

CodeRabbit on #548: if a process forks after acquiring the WAL
checkpoint flock, the child keeps the OFD open without a checkpointer
thread. Closing that FD in adopt_after_fork (without LOCK_UN) lets a
surviving worker take the lock after the parent exits; unlocking would
drop the parent's hold. Retain the File on Db; pin with a concurrency
test.
