Hooty - Interactive Posting Tool

Hooty is an interactive GUI-like posting tool that allows you to quickly compose and send posts to multiple social media services simultaneously. It provides an immediate, user-friendly way to share content without going through the RSS feed queue system.

Overview

Hooty (hooty.sh) is a rewrite of the patootie tool that uses agaetr's service framework to interactively send posts to multiple services immediately. It's designed for:

  • Quick manual posting of interesting links
  • Testing service configurations
  • Sharing content that doesn't come from RSS feeds
  • Interactive social media management

Features

  • Interactive Interface: User-friendly prompts for composing posts
  • Multi-Service Posting: Send to multiple platforms simultaneously
  • Service Selection: Choose which services to post to for each item
  • Content Processing: Automatic URL deobfuscation and metadata extraction
  • Image Handling: Automatic image detection and processing
  • Content Warnings: Apply content warning rules interactively
  • Real-time Preview: See how your post will appear before sending

Installation and Setup

Prerequisites

Hooty requires the same dependencies as the main agaetr system:

  • Configured social media services in agaetr.ini
  • Enabled service scripts in out_enabled/
  • All agaetr dependencies installed

Making Hooty Executable

chmod +x hooty.sh

Service Configuration

Hooty uses the same service configurations as agaetr. Ensure your desired services are configured in agaetr.ini with proper API keys/credentials. As you are selecting at runtime, it uses the available out processors.

Basic Usage

Starting Hooty

./hooty.sh

This launches the interactive interface that will guide you through the posting process.

Interactive Workflow

  1. URL Input: Enter the URL you want to share
  2. Content Review: Hooty fetches and displays:
    • Page title
    • Description/summary
    • Available images
    • Detected hashtags
  3. Content Editing: Modify the title, description, or other fields as needed
  4. Service Selection: Choose which platforms to post to
  5. Content Warning Review: Apply or modify content warnings
  6. Post Confirmation: Review final post and confirm sending
  7. Posting: Hooty sends to selected services and reports results

Command-Line Options

./hooty.sh [URL]

Optional Parameters:

  • URL: Pre-populate with a specific URL to share

Advanced Features

Pre-configured Content

You can start hooty with a URL to skip the initial input:

./hooty.sh "https://example.com/article"

Integration with agaetr Framework

Shared Configuration

Hooty uses the same agaetr.ini configuration file, including:

  • Service credentials and paths
  • Content warning rules
  • Image processing settings
  • URL shortening configuration

Service Compatibility

All services that work with agaetr work with hooty:

  • Social media platforms (Mastodon, Bluesky, Pixelfed, Tumblr)
  • Bookmarking services (Shaarli, Wallabag)
  • Communication services (Email, RSS)
  • Archive services (Wayback Machine, local captures)

Variable Passing

Hooty uses the same variable interface as agaetr services:

  • $title, $description, $link, $imgurl, $ALT_TEXT
  • Content warning variables
  • Service-specific configurations
