This freezes the first 0.2 feature batch around the Rust provider, optional managed preset, Vite 8/Vite+, bundler integration and documented SSR islands. Octane remains a private workspace experiment with its independent browser fixture; public builds, package checks and release planning exclude it. Public dependency/optional/peer edges cannot reference private workspaces, and making an experiment public still requires an explicit first-release Changeset.

The Vite 8 and Vite+ consumers now exercise Vue, React, Solid and Svelte through production interaction, strict declarations, development edits and compiler-error recovery. The preset consumer installs seven tarballs into a separate app and tests ordinary dev/build commands while blocking ambient Rust tools and retaining the host SDK. The existing three-platform job runs that browser path; no CI matrix jobs were added. English and Chinese docs describe the frozen scope and unpublished boundaries.

Validation:

  • Vite 8.2.1 and Vite+ 0.2.9 four-framework matrices passed locally.
  • Managed preset browser edit/error/recovery and production consumer passed locally on macOS arm64.
  • Release contract, 12 public package archives, clean TypeScript 5.5/5.9 consumers, helper types, release metadata, change policy and documentation checks passed.
  • Actual source version-plan rehearsal produced eight 0.2.0-alpha.0 candidates, preserved unchanged packages/history and remained idempotent. It made no registry writes.

No npm publication, version application to the branch, or public documentation deployment is included. Next.js, SolidStart, SvelteKit and server-rendered Rust remain outside the accepted SSR scope.

The Windows acceptance assertions canonicalize actual filesystem paths so 8.3 short names and full paths identify the same tool. Cache containment is checked after canonicalization for Cargo, rustc and wasm-bindgen.

One local macOS rerun timed out on the initial component mount after Vite dependency optimization. Its diagnostic rerun passed, so the cause is not established; browser errors and failed-page capture are now retained for diagnosis. No retry, longer timeout or dependency-optimizer override was added. Final cross-platform CI revalidates this path.

Final follow-up changes only tests/preset-consumer.mjs: canonicalize the temporary app root before invoking Vite, which otherwise rejects Windows 8.3 aliases against its serving allowlist, and fail immediately on startup HTTP 4xx. No serving restriction is relaxed. The updated consumer passed locally and reruns in the three-platform integration workflow. Verify and documentation checks passed on 77c0e13; their code and inputs are unchanged in this test-only follow-up, so the duplicate Verify run was canceled to conserve CI capacity. The documentation build had already completed successfully.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes mark Octane as a private experiment outside the public release process, expand Vite framework verification to four frameworks, and add a packed preset-consumer test that checks managed-toolchain behavior and browser-based development and build flows.

Changes

Release and integration evidence

Layer / File(s) Summary
Octane release boundary
.changeset/*, packages/octane/*, scripts/source/*, tests/release-lines-contract.mjs, package.json, docs/maintainers/*, docs/project/*, docs/reference/*, docs/guide/*, docs/zh-CN/*
Octane is marked private and removed from standard package builds and packed-package checks. Release-model validation excludes private packages and rejects public packages that depend on them. Release documentation identifies Octane as outside the 0.2 public release batch.
Vite framework evidence
tests/vite8-frameworks.mjs, tests/rust-hmr.mjs, tests/rust-*-source.mjs, docs/project/compatibility.md, docs/project/next-release.md, docs/project/status.md, docs/guide/*, docs/reference/tooling.md, docs/zh-CN/*
The Vite 8 and Vite+ matrix covers Vue, React, Solid, and Svelte. HMR checks cover host-component edits across frameworks. The documentation updates the framework count and the described compatibility checks.
Packed preset-consumer acceptance
tests/prepare-preset-consumer.mjs, tests/preset-consumer.mjs, package.json, .github/workflows/integrations.yml, docs/project/next-release.md, docs/project/ssr-roadmap.md, docs/zh-CN/project/*
The test prepares a managed toolchain cache, installs seven packed packages into a Vue/Vite consumer, checks toolchain selection, and exercises browser development, Rust edits, compiler-error recovery, and production build. The workflow installs Chromium for the test.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 228c0

A public package could pass release validation while depending on the private Octane workspace for development. Close this release-boundary gap; the established risk is bounded and does not otherwise block merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 228c0

The release boundary is strengthened, but the new setup step trusts a predictable temporary-directory cache. On a shared host, another local user could prepare that cache so their executable runs with the developer’s permissions. This does not establish exposure on the configured hosted CI runners or through a public service.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new prerequisite uses a predictable cache beneath tmpdir(). Where that directory is shared, a local attacker can precreate a writable cache containing a matching ready marker and executable files. The existing installer accepts that cache without ownership or authenticity checks, and resolution executes its Cargo binary before the setup assertions. This can execute attacker code with the invoking developer’s permissions, environment and workspace access. The base consumer’s default cache was inside a randomly allocated temporary root; hosted-CI exploitation is not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified attack requires a shared local temporary directory that an attacker can prepopulate or modify. Successful execution inherits the invoking user’s environment and workspace authority. It is not a remotely reachable service attack, and the supplied workflow does not establish cross-user access on its hosted runners.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A preseeded setup cache can satisfy ready-cache checks and place attacker-controlled Cargo first in the prepared PATH. Resolution invokes that executable before path assertions, so a later assertion or failed build cannot prevent its initial execution. Ready-cache semantics predate the PR; the predictable temporary-directory caller is new.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The independent consumer blocks ambient Cargo, rustc, rustup and wasm-bindgen and checks managed paths. These checks strengthen toolchain-selection evidence but do not authenticate the separate prerequisite cache. Download hashes apply to fresh installation, while the lock coordinates installers rather than validating cache provenance.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Ordinary failure cleanup is explicit, but the consumer has no signal-interruption cleanup handler and its development server is detached on non-Windows hosts. Cancellation may bypass finally blocks; repository-local evidence does not establish terminal cleanup or externally supplied cache ownership in those cases.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use a privately allocated temporary directory for prerequisite tools, or a restricted per-user cache with ownership and symlink validation before reuse. Path-prefix and version checks should not substitute for establishing who controls executable files.

Reject private workspaces in devDependencies too.

Release documentation forbids public packages from depending on private workspaces. readReleaseModel skips devDependencies, so a public package can declare @vooya/octane there and pass release validation. Add this field to the guard and contract test.
