Summary

An impersonated backend user can retain the target account's full permissions after the original backend user is soft-deleted. The session still contains the original user's ID, but the normal soft-delete scope makes getImpersonator() return false; the permission merge then skips its intended intersection. On a later permission check, the target's permissions are available in the same session.

This patch distinguishes the documented external/system impersonation sentinel (false) from a stored backend user ID that no longer resolves. When a stored actor is missing, the backend ends impersonation and denies permissions for the current target model, including repeated checks. A valid backend actor continues to cap permissions as before, and explicitly authorized external/system impersonation remains supported.

Changes

  • Add AuthManager::isExternalImpersonation() to identify the explicit external/system sentinel.
  • Fail closed and stop impersonation when a stored backend actor no longer resolves.
  • Keep the current target model denied after the session is cleared, so later checks cannot repopulate its permission cache.
  • Add regression tests for deleting the original actor through the normal backend AJAX handler, repeated permission checks, and the external/system impersonation path.

Verification

  • modules/backend/tests/controllers/ImpersonationPermissionTest.php — 2 tests, 15 assertions passed.
  • modules/backend/tests/models/UserAuthorizationTest.php — 39 tests, 39 assertions passed.
  • modules/backend/tests/classes/AuthManagerTest.php — 8 tests, 35 assertions passed.
  • vendor/bin/phpcs -nq --report=full --extensions=php modules/backend/classes/AuthManager.php modules/backend/models/User.php modules/backend/tests/controllers/ImpersonationPermissionTest.php — passed.

All target-controlled test runs used a disposable source copy in a network-disabled Bubblewrap namespace.

Affected source

Reproduced at develop commit eec0c423a1978a02ee04cfec73f555c43e6ff7fa. The exact first affected release and fixed release range are not established.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Impersonated users’ access is limited to permissions the original impersonator is allowed to use. If that impersonator is deleted or can no longer be verified, the impersonated session loses access rather than retaining elevated permissions, including when permissions are reloaded during the same session.
    • Explicit external impersonation remains supported and continues to provide the intended access while active. After a revoked impersonation, the target can begin external impersonation again, and active impersonation can still be stopped.

Navigate logical layers of code changes, visualize relationships, and explore their blast radius.

Walkthrough

AuthManager adds a check for external impersonation based on the impersonator state and session value. It also resets the target’s impersonation state after impersonation starts. User tracks revoked impersonation permissions and returns no permissions after revocation. When a backend impersonator cannot be resolved and the session is not an external impersonation, User stops impersonation and revokes permissions. Tests cover deleted impersonators and explicit external impersonation.

Priority: ⬆️ High

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 14b8c

This change ends impersonation and denies permissions when the impersonating admin no longer exists. Two concerns remain. Permissions already cached in the current request may skip the new check. A site with an after-impersonation listener that checks permissions could hit repeated stop-impersonation calls. Confirm both before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 14b8c

The change restricts impersonated access without expanding who may impersonate. Existing cached-access and explicitly overridden superuser behavior limit the revocation guarantee. Interrupted cleanup and concurrent-session behavior remain incompletely established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The assessed authority scope is an existing backend impersonation session and the target backend account's permissions. Normal initiation requires impersonation permission and excludes superuser targets. Trusted event overrides can authorize a broader target scope, including bypassing that default restriction; this extension authority is unchanged.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The deferred superuser candidate's missing source was recovered. hasAccess() grants superuser access before permission merging, so an event-authorized superuser target does not encounter the new missing-actor check through that method. Ordinary target policy rejects superusers, and both the shortcut and event override existed at the PR base. No introduced or worsened exposure was established for this candidate.
  • inferred — A populated target permission cache bypasses renewed actor resolution, and the parent can return an already cached actor object. Previously allowed access can therefore survive actor deletion within an in-flight request. These behaviors predate this PR. The same-request test checks that a permission previously excluded remains excluded; it does not establish immediate revocation of all cached access.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — A failed backend actor lookup is no longer sufficient to obtain the external exception. The exception requires the exact false marker written by the parent for the existing system or separate-authentication transition. The classifier itself neither authorizes impersonation nor changes the parent authorization decision.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Automatic revocation sets its model-local denial flag only after stopImpersonate() returns. That cleanup invokes an extension event before removing authentication and impersonator state. An exception can therefore interrupt both denial recording and cleanup. Deployed handlers and catch-and-retry behavior were not established, so this is incomplete failure-path coverage rather than a verified PR-introduced authorization bypass.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider enforcing backend actor validity before cache and superuser shortcuts, recording denial before extension cleanup, and defining concurrent-session revocation semantics. Preserve the explicitly authorized external impersonation contract.

Guard stopImpersonate() against reentrant event dispatch.

If a model.auth.afterImpersonate listener checks access for a non-superuser target, that check can call stopImpersonate() again before the first call clears the session state. getMergedPermissions() sets $impersonationRevoked only after stopImpersonate() returns. Each dispatch loads a new Backend\Models\User, so a flag on the original model cannot stop the recursion. Add a manager-level guard that prevents a reentrant stopImpersonate() from dispatching the event again.

@AlpetGexha I don't understand what this PR is attempting to fix? If you delete a user while someone else is impersonating that user then that session is logged out, you can't be logged in as a soft deleted user.
